Spirituality of Bruce Springsteen
This non-religious series is a musical and narrative exploration into the lives and music of individual musicians and bands and the “spirituality” implicit in their work. While fewer and fewer people still look to houses of faith for spiritual insight and guidance ~ many others look to their favorite songs as sources of comfort and inspiration. Songs like, “I still haven’t found what I am looking for” (U2); “The times they are a changing” (Bob Dylan); and “All you need is love” (The Beatles) are anthems that flow from one generation to another. While many songs seem to be written to a particular person, others are (intentionally or not) like prayers for “peace, love and understanding” (Elvis Costello).
This series, written and narrated by Dwight Lee Wolter, is primarily for the enjoyment and encouragement of the audience at the Congregational Church of Patchogue. But it is also a call for musicians to take their role as leader, guide, pastor, priest, punk and confidante more seriously as they increasingly give voice to the heart and soul of their “followers”.
The music of each artist presented in this series is performed by a different New York-based musical group or individual. These are not tribute bands. They are professionals who are adept at their own music and with their own following who have consented to spend an evening honoring and exploring the music of a designated artist. So far we have presented The Spirituality of the Beatles; Bob Dylan; and The Spirituality of the Blues.
